Photos on Friday – Cherry Creek State Park

•January 23, 2010 • Leave a Comment

My schedule has changed a bit for my “day job”, and I now only have to work 4 hours on Fridays.  When I choose to work those 4 hours is pretty much up to me.  Today I chose to work in the morning and then get some late afternoon photography in.  Since switching gears to portrait photography, I’ve neglected my love of fine art prints.  No more!  Plans are in motion to get back to fine art photography in 2010.  I’ve added a Fine Art gallery to my website (to order prints online, click on Clients).  Here are my favorites from today at Cherry Creek State Park…

Ryan S – Headshots

•November 9, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Normally I shoot outdoors or events.  This weekend I ventured into a little “studio” work and did headshots in my home.  I felt a little inferior and intimidated since I don’t have a lot of fancy studio lighting.  I have black seamless and white seamless paper backgrounds and a single off-camera flash with a small soft box cover.  I don’t have a dedicated studio space in my home either.  What I do have is amazing light coming in through the living room window of my WNW facing home.  I know that if I didn’t have this natural light to work with, I would need the studio lighting to pull this off.  For now, especially with space being an issue, I will avoid this expense and continue to use what God provides!

We started with some test shots using the off-camera flash, and we were not pleased with the results.  Ryan and I both actually prefer the look of shadows, and the flash was just too much.  So most of these photos (with the exception of one) were done with no flash whatsoever – only natural light.  These photos have not yet been retouched.

R16A quick stop on the way back to Ryan’s house after the shoot to test a shot image I had in my head.
Due to a puzzling flash malfunction, the shot didn’t quite go as planned.
All was not lost, however! Ryan is a film student and thought the location would be good for a project for school. :)

Sunday Sightings :: First Things First

•September 13, 2009 • Leave a Comment

After a long week filled with work, errands, appointments, and other activities both mundane and fun, it’s always nice to enjoy a little time to recharge.  I can’t think of a better way for me to recharge than by escaping with my camera for some free shooting.  ”Sunday Sightings” will be a new weekly installment on the blog.  This week’s sighting was captured while putting first things first: coffee & creamer (a beautiful marriage).

Good Morning!

Kaley B. – Senior Photos

What a perfect spot for Kaley’s senior photos!  She wanted flowers, and the gardens at Washington Park were in full bloom.  We weren’t sure if the weather would hold out since it had rained less than 30 minutes before I was to pick them up for the shoot, but it was perfect.  I even worked my new car into a few shots!

Miranda – School Pictures

•September 1, 2009 • Leave a Comment

School pictures are very affordable because you’re only paying for the prints and not for the service.  However, as the teachers tell young students, “You get what you get, and you don’t throw a fit.”  One pose with a plain background.  If you’re lucky, you might get a choice of jewel-tone backdrops.  When my kids were in elementary school, I never thought of having their portraits taken elsewhere. Now I say, “Why not?”  Senior photos are special, and I will always put all I have into them.  There’s no reason school photos throughout the years can’t be a little more special, too.  So I may be adding a special portrait option for a 30-minute photo shoot.  If I think it might fly, it will be rolled out completely by next summer.
